Megan's Law Website of Local Registered Sex Offenders

Yesterday when I was reading the emails on the VC Moms Group somebody brought up the site for registered sex offenders under "Megan's Law". She pointed out that one lived in the Wagon Wheel Hotel where a bunch of the group goes for swimming lessons (so don't let your kids go into the changing rooms alone!) I went to it and was shocked to see how many there were in Ventura (and even more in Oxnard). I am lining up a childcare situation for Lauren for this Fall and now I will use this website to make my decisions about where she should go-that's for sure!

Web site home for a search of your zipcode:

http://meganslaw.ca.gov/search_main.asp?searchtype=city

List of the 147 registered sex offenders IN VENTURA!

http://meganslaw.ca.gov/cgi/prosoma.dll?zoomAction=Box&lastName=&firstName=&Address=&City=&zipcode=&searchDistance=.75&City2=ventura&countyLocation=&zipcode2=&SelectCounty=&ParkName=&searchDistance2=.75&City3=&zipcode3=&countyLocation3=&schoolName=&searchDistance3=.75&City4=&zipcode4=&countyLocation4=&pan=&distacross=15737&centerlat=34303611&centerlon=-119314292&starlat=0&starlon=0&startext=&x1=&y1=&x2=&y2=&mapwidth=525&mapheight=400&zoom=&searchBy=citylist&id=&docountycitylist=2&OFDTYPE=C476

Anyway, before I found this on the VC Mom's group, I "Googled" it, and all that comes up are sites you have to pay for, not this free one. So, here is the REAL site with pictures of registered sex offenders, what they were arrested for, and where they live (hopefully not next door to your babysitter).

Maybe I AM over reacting-but there are 5 sex offenders within a block of me. One even looks "Normal"-I would not freak out if I passed him on the street!

Just wanted to get this out there in case any of you, like me, want to be informed and make decisions accordingly!

Songs for your baby

Study: Parents Can Help Babies Get Rhythm

By LAURAN NEERGAARD, AP Medical Writer
Thu Jun 2, 7:47 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Gently bounce a baby while you sing, and you'll usually
get squeals of glee. But it's not just fun: Feeling the beat helps
wire babies' brains to hear rhythm. So says new research that tested
moms and babies doing what comes naturally — dancing around together.

Everybody knows babies love music. Around the globe, parents sing to
their infants in a special way, with a distinctive high pitch that's
soothingly slow for a lullaby and elaborately bright at playtime.
Babies catch on quickly, able to perceive aspects of melody and
recognize different beats at just a few months of age.

As psychologist Laurel Trainor studied how babies perceive music, she
noticed that parents hardly ever sing to them without bouncing or
rocking or playing with their feet. She wondered if that movement was
important developmentally.

Her research shows it is: Using multiple senses helps the brain learn
about rhythm — how we move indeed influences what we hear — Trainor
reports in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

"It's wiring the sensory system," said Trainor, of Canada's McMaster
University. "That early experience that parents do naturally is
probably really important for learning down the road."

Consider it an early step toward learning to make music, or at least
to really appreciate it, said infant development specialist David
Lewkowicz, a psychology professor at Florida Atlantic University.

"It's a very clever kind of study," said Lewkowicz, whose own
research also shows that stimulating multiple senses is important for
brain development. "When babies are learning about their world, we
should never lose sight of the fact that they are learning in a ...
multisensory context."

Trainor and colleague Jessica Phillips-Silver tested 16 healthy 7-
month-olds by having them listen to music made by a snare drum and
sticks that had an ambiguous rhythm — no accented beats. Mothers
bounced half the infants on every second beat, in a march-like
rhythm, and half on every third beat, in a waltz-like rhythm.

Then the researchers played the music again, this time with the beats
accented in either the march or waltz pattern.

The babies preferred to listen to the pattern that matched how they'd
been bounced. (Trainor measured preference by how long the babies
looked at speakers playing the different selections.)

Watching someone else bounce to the music didn't do the trick. In a
series of tests, the babies picked out a rhythm only if they'd been
moved to that beat while listening to the original, nonaccented tune.

Nor was vision necessary. Blindfolded babies picked out the rhythm,
too, as long as they'd been bounced.

So what if you don't boogie with your baby?

No one needs continual bouncing, and passive listening certainly
isn't bad. "But they're not getting the full experience that they
would naturally get in most human cultures" without some bouncing
along, says Trainor, whose research was funded by the Canadian
government. "It suggests that you're better off to do music in an
interactive way.

"It probably doesn't matter if you listen to Mozart or a rock band or
jazz," she adds. "All those kinds of music and concurrent rhythms go
to wire up the brain."
DO Bug Me! (19th Annual Bug Fair)

This weekend the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History is having
their annual Bug Fair, which according to Susan Peterson, is
something to see.
http://www.funplaces.com/

http://www.nhm.org/exhibitions/bugfair/index.html
19th Annual Bug Fair
Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The museum will once again be crawling with bugs Saturday, May 21 and
Sunday May 22, 2005! Be sure not to miss the 19th Annual Bug Fair –
North America’s largest. Explore the world of insects and their
arthropod relatives. See live spiders and scorpions, start your own
collection of butterflies and stay for some great cooking tips from
world- renowned Insect Chef David George Gordon. Over 50 vendors will
be on hand with books, entomological equipment and supplies, artwork,
toys, clothing and more! A variety of private collections will be
offered for sale, along with an assortment of live bugs. The Los
Angeles Urban Spider Survey enters its fourth year and we once again
urge patrons to bring in any spider that they collect*. The Bug Fair
is included with Museum admission.

*The Museum appreciates your assistance with the Spider Survey. If
you have any concerns about participating, we suggest you DO NOT
participate. The Museum cannot be responsible for the treatment of
any bites or any illness resulting from the project.

Baby Cereal Cookies #104405

If your baby, like mine, isn't keen on baby cereal or other pureed
foods, I found this recipe when I was searching for
ways to incorporate baby cereal and other iron-rich
foods into a finger-food diet for her. They are
wonderful! To mix things up, I sometimes add a banana
or a handful of raisins to the mix. (I found the
recipe at www.simcoehealth.org.)

1/4 cup molasses
1/4 cup butter
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups infant cereal
3 tablespoons whole milk

24 servings Change size or US/metric
Change to: servings US Metric

20 minutes 10 mins prep ....

Preheat oven to 375.
Grease a cookie sheet or spray with nonstick spray.
Lightly cream molasses and butter.
Mix in egg and vanilla.
In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and
cereal.
Add to the butter mixture.
Blend.
Add milk.
Drop on the cookie sheet 2 inches apart.
Bake 10-12 minutes.

If you have any healthy homemade snacks (finger food types) to share, please add them to this thread. Thanks!

No doubt you've heard the unflattering (but not uncommon) mothering stereotype that babies suck as much energy from your brain as they do from your body. Ouch. Sure, childrearing takes a toll — as evidenced by the time you squeezed nipple cream onto your toothbrush. But giving birth is hardly the equivalent of a frontal lobotomy. In fact, motherhood may be the ticket to boosting your brainpower.

Watch Dr. Phil May 5th and 6th

A group of us "Mommies" made it down to be in the audience of the Dr. Phil Show today, and they are going to show the episodes on May 5th (Beth, Jen, Carly and Laurie will be in the audience) and the Mother's Day episode on the May 6th (the first 4 plus Toni and Ilse). For the 2nd taping Beth had it all figured out and marched us over the place where the camera guys really focused on the audience, so because she was so on the ball, I have a feeling we are going to as least be recognizable in the audience shots! So look for people you know next Thursday and Friday-look for Beth first because most of the people in the audience wore black, but she wore this fabulous pink jacket. We're all sitting beside her.

We also have a new celebrity among us-"Dr. Beth" - who made a grand entrance onto the stage and graciously waved to the wildly applauding crowd and bowed when she got to the center while 250+ of us clapped and cheered. She was also acknowledged as "Dr. Phil's greatest fan". (She was also great to go with-she is a natural born leader / and a big ham-and made it a lot of fun).

It was really worth the trip south and we got some cool Mother's Day gifts (see the show to see what). Definitely a good time. Let's figure out to get a bunch of us to go next year.... when you see the show you will see why.

We signed a non-disclosure agreement so I can't be more specific or they will hunt us down and take our firstborns-in my case, my only born (I think that goes for all of us so it's a good threat!)

Well, gotta go be a Mommy again!
Play the day away at the 15th annual Children's Nature Institute Kids'
Nature Festival! An event to celebrate, explore and deepen young
children's understanding of nature, and the only nature festival in
Southern California just for kids 8 and under.

Touch, splash, make believe, and even get a little messy at the
thirty plus hands-on activity stations. Tickle your senses at
Sensation Station, get a grip at the ponds of slimy Goop, search for
fossils at the Dino Dig, explore the depths of the Bat Cave, and
crawl through kid-size Mole Mazes!

You can dress up as your favorite animal at the costume booth, make
your own nature crafts, and enjoy lunch under the trees as you sing
along to live concerts. Friendly lizards, tortoises, opossums, and
birds will add to the menagerie of fun!

I am starting out this site with a clothing swap/giveaway thread. I have a BUNCH of baby girl clothes, size 0-12 months, that I don't need right now. I have some other baby stuff as well. Anyone who want to look through them/pick some out is welcome to (I'm planning on having another baby next year so may want them back after you finish with them which is why I'm not just donating them to Goodwill)

Anyone have clothes or other things they'd like to trade or loan or giveaway?

Hello Moms!!

I wanted to let you all know that we are doing a Mother's Day show on Thursday April 28th!!!!! Its going to be an amazing time and I definitely wanted to include everyone that is available to attend! I only have a limited amount of seating so please let me know asap if you will be in attendance with the number of guests you will be bringing. You may bring one, four, or twenty guests (some may want to put a group together) with you- but please let me know so I can reserve seats for the party. We want to have as many mothers as possible in the audience for this show.

It is a morning taping so you would be checking in between 730 and 830am, and taping ends at 11:30am.

Below is the arrival information- of course you may contact me at any time if you have questions about any of this. All the best! This is definitely a show you wont want to miss!

Dr. Phil tapes at:

Paramount is located on the corner of Melrose and Gower.
The audience entrance is located under a giant blue mural of a blue whale.

There is a parking garage across the street from the audience entrance, its $5 for the day.

EVERYONE can be seen on camera! So, we ask that everyone dress in business attire. The studio is EXTREMELY air conditioned, so we suggest you dress warmly. Please wear dark and solid colors and avoid busy patterns, white clothing, tan clothing, jeans, and hats. Also, please no uniforms or clothing with logos.

Please leave all electronics, including cell phones, pagers, palm pilots, and cameras behind. Also, books, magazines, and notebooks will not be allowed into the studio.

Please advise me if there are any special needs, just so we can accommodate.

Everyone must bring a PHOTO ID. We do not issue tickets and we will check you in by your ID. Remember that everyone must be 18 years of age.

Anyone Want To Go To Mickey Mouse's Birthday Party?

Disneyland is having their 50th Birthday Party on May 5th (Cinco De Mayo). I just got my $99 Annual SoCal Pass so think I might go. I was wondering if any other Moms want to go. I think it is a Thursday but will double check.

I went with some out-of-town family members today and it was a lot of fun! Lauren loved Toontown and the Flying Dumbos and the Teacups and the"Columbia" boatride (she was not so wild about Pirates of the Carribbean though).

I'll post a photo in my album of us with Mickey Mouse soon. Come to the party with us-should be fun!
